Steph’s Story
Stephanie George is a committed, disciplined and driven golfer. To date, she has won two professional tournaments: the 2003 Michelob Light FUTURES Charity Golf Classic in Forsyth, IL and the 2005 Hunters Oak FUTURES Golf Classic in Queenstown, MD.
Her innate talent and dedication to the game, along with her keen sense of humor, easy-going style and gracious manner, has won the admiration of sponsors and spectators alike. While on tour, Steph is cheered on by many loyal supporters, watching as she swings her way to a successful professional golfing career.
Steph first exhibited her dominant athleticism in high school, where she earned distinctions in golf, soccer and basketball.
It all started for Steph nearly 10 years ago, when the then-ninth grader first played competitive golf on an all-boys team in the Eastern Lebanon County school district. During her sophomore year, Steph was voted MVP of both the school’s golf and soccer teams. She also earned a place on the soccer all-star team four years in a row and still holds the school record for career goals and assists.
As a senior, Steph was voted MVP of her school’s golf, soccer and basketball teams. What’s more, she served as captain of the Elco High golf team and made the all-star team for the league in all three sports.
Yet, ultimately, golf proved to be Steph’s passion. Although she received four-year scholarships for both Division I basketball and soccer, she opted to attend Virginia’s Radford University on a four-year golf scholarship.
In college, Steph further developed her natural golf talent, marking several firsts for the Radford Highlanders along the way. In 2001, Steph was the first golfer — male or female — in Highlander history to be selected to an East Regional Division I individual golf position. She also was the first and only Radford student to reach the NCAA regional tournament, either as an individual or with a team.
Later that year, Stephanie made her first appearance at York’s YWCA FUTURES Classic as an amateur player. By then, sponsors and supporters were taking notice. In 2002, she turned professional and joined the LPGA’s official developmental tour, the FUTURES.
On tour, Steph honed her competitive skills, adhering to a successful new strategy: keeping mentally focused on her own game.
Her hard work paid off: Steph enjoyed her first professional golf victory at the 2003 Michelob Light FUTURES Charity Golf Classic in Forsyth, IL.
By 2004, she had garnered five top-five finishes and ranked 18th on the overall earnings list. Steph then secured her second tournament win at the 2005 Hunters Oak FUTURES Golf Classic in Queenstown, MD. She ended the year moving up to #13 on the earnings list for 2005.
Steph began the 2006 tour with a second-place finish at the Greater Tampa Duramed FUTURES Classic in Riverview, FL. As the tour continues, this now-veteran golfer is one to watch.
