Practice Log
Gearing Up for a Weekend Golf Tournament
To maintain peak competitive form takes practice, practice and more practice. Here is a look at Steph’s typical practice schedule for a tournament week:
Monday
- Mostly spent traveling to the next golf tournament.
- Usually the only day off during a golf tournament week.
- Hits range balls for at least one hour.
Tuesday
- Hits golf balls early in the morning.
- Gets familiar with the tournament golf course.
- Takes lots of notes on the golf course and maps the greens.
- Goes back to the golf driving range after a round.
- Does a lot of short game practice and putting.
Wednesday
- Plays another practice round.
- Works hard with her irons and putting.
- Makes sure her golf game is solid for competing.
Thursday
- This is pro-am day.
- Does light practice, including some golf driving range time and a little bit of putting.
- Focuses more on being sharp and energized for golf tournament weekend, rather than playing too much.
Friday, Saturday, Sunday
- The golf tournament takes place.
- Spends 1 ½ hours warming up at the golf driving range and putting.
- After a round, hits some more golf balls, incorporating what she has learned on the golf course.
Steph’s Practice Secrets
Find out how Steph establishes her own golfing style, as this veteran FUTURES Tour golfer shares her game practice secrets firsthand.
I place myself in awkward shot positions, such as behind a tree, in the divot and in the deep rough. These shots simulate a real round of golf and the situations you can get into. Not all golf is short grass and birdies.
Range
- I spend a lot of time practicing with each club.
- When I am not hitting well, I stay with the shot until I do.
- If I am hitting well, I learn how to hit better and groove my swing.
- I spend about three hours on the driving range. I don’t know how many golf balls I hit; it’s quality, not quantity.
Short game
- I spend two hours hitting chips, shots out of the rough and bunker shots.
- I play little games to make it more fun. For example:
- I do not leave a shot until I chip four balls in the hole
- I make sure I don’t hit out of a four-foot circle
- I hold contests with friends for money.
Putting
- I only spend an hour at the putting green. Sometimes I spend two hours, but not all at the same time.
- To add more fun, I include some variations:
- Ladder Drill - I place tees about 2, 5, 7 and 10 feet from the hole. Then, I putt two golf balls from each distance and have to make them all, or else start all over again from the beginning.
- Wheel Drill - It’s the same concept as a ladder drill, but I place tees around the hole in a circle, then need to sink them all.
- I do a lot of short and lag putting to get the speed of the greens.
Trick Shots
- It’s nice to hit the ball straight, but sometimes that can hurt you. A pin can be tucked on the right side of a green behind a bunker and you need to shape the ball in there from left to right to get it as close as possible. So on the range and practice rounds, I try to practice hitting cut shots, draw shots, and even punch shots for the wind. You never know what you might need out there!
